Above-Ground Oil Tank Removal Process

Tanks Be Gone' provides above-ground oil tank removal and replacement services throughout Connecticut.

Above-ground tanks in basements, garages, crawl spaces, and exterior locations can deteriorate due to age and corrosion, increasing the risk of leaks.

The process below outlines what to expect during above-ground tank removal or replacement, from permitting and safety preparation to removal, recycling, and documentation.

1. Permits

When required, we obtain local permits for above-ground tank removal/replacement.

2. Scheduling

Work is scheduled at least one week in advance so the customer can prepare the area and allow access for removal.

3. Safety Review

Our crew conducts an on-site safety meeting to review project conditions and potential hazards.

4. Oil Removal

If the tank contains heating oil, pumpable liquids are transferred to an approved holding tank.

5. Tank Cleaning & Safety Preparation

We test the tank atmosphere for combustible vapors. If necessary, an inert gas is introduced to eliminate combustion risk before cutting.

Heavy-wall piping is removed as needed. Tanks are cut according to API Publication 2015 or removed intact depending on site conditions.

The tank is cleaned by removing liquids and sludge. Materials are transported to approved recycling facilities.

6. Tank Removal

After cleaning, tanks are removed in sections or intact depending on site conditions.

Fill and vent pipes are capped or removed, and wall openings are sealed with concrete or appropriate material.

Copper supply and return lines are evacuated with a vacuum pump, crimped at both ends, and removed when accessible.

7. Tank Recycling

Tanks removed whole are cut and cleaned at our facility before transport to an authorized metal recycling center.

8. Documentation

After completion, we prepare documentation of tank closure activities when required, along with the final invoice and receipt.
